"Huh."

Warren hadn't really expected last night to go quite the way that it had. Being caught at Karla's door had been unexpected, but not entirely unlikely, considering how long he'd dithered in the doorway. Coming in to talk... made sense. It had been a long time coming. The conversation to follow that is still being played out had been a long time coming, too.

Staying up so late to talk that he and Karla had just both kind of zonked out together? That was the part he really hadn't seen coming.

"... Huh."

But he didn't really mind, either. And he didn't particularly want to wake Karla up, so there he was, blinking up at the ceiling, kind of trying to work his head around it, a bit.

[Muwahaha, I'm a dirty room-modder! For the girlfriend and any wee ones that might come running along!]

There was a crying little girl in her lap. One that teleported in with a blue gem attached to forehead, calling Warren 'Step-father.' Hell's fire and Mother Night. Still, there was a crying little girl in her lap and Karla couldn't just ignore that, no matter how insane the circumstances might be.

Exchanging a confused--and apologetic--glance with Warren, Karla freed her hand from Jaenelle Mara's and wrapped her arms around the dark-haired little thing. "Hush, little one. Hush. It's okay. I'm here. So is Warren. Everything's okay."

Rook clung to Maman's neck and buried her face in her shoulder. "I was so scared Mother had gotten me somehow," she whispered. "I did not know where I was, but this is not the Keep. But you are here and Step-father and I am just so happy that we are a family again."

Rook grabbed Warren's hand and clung to it. "I have missed you so," she said. "I am so glad Maman got you back somehow. And I promise I will be a good girl and will not go wandering. We will all stay at the Keep and help Maman recover and I promise I shall be so very, very good," she sniffled.

Karla had...less than no idea. She was just kind of clinging to the little girl and looking at Warren, wide-eyed.

"It's okay, darling, it really is. Let's just take this nice and slow, a little at a time, okay? First of all, what's your name. You kind of have me and Warren at a disadvantage, okay?"

"I am Rook," the little girl said quietly. "Maman, do you not remember? Or is this another side-effect of you being so sick?"

She glanced down at Karla's legs. "Maman! Your legs! How are they like that?!"

Karla had a sinking feeling in her stomach at that.

"My legs?" she asked gently, remembering Jaenelle Mara's words from last year. "They're just like they always were."

Rook released her death-grip on Karla's neck and Warren's hand, bending down to examine Karla's legs again, sliding her hands down Karla's legs. "It is like it never happened at all," she marveled. "Maman, this is wonderful!"

"Like what never happened?" Karla pressed.

"You're not s'posed to say anything," Jaenelle Mara said from the other side of the bed. "Mummy says we're not s'posed to tell about the future. She said so after I went home last time. She says that this version of Mummy must live her own life."
